--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- During a very special one-night-only silent auction, five of Photographer Charlotte Dumas’ favorite photographs from the sixteen-part series Retrieved will be offered up to benefit the First Responder Alliance. All five prints will include Charlotte’s personal notes on the depicted rescue veterans, providing a more detailed and intimate impression of each dog’s career. The extras will include visuals which are not available elsewhere. Charlotte will be present at the event, where she will be signing her new book, Retrieved, throughout the evening. The first print-run of Retrieved is sold out ahead of the 10/31 release date, and is on its second run! For more information: www.retrievedbycharlottedumas.tumblr.com About Retrieved: Charlotte Dumas has completed a moving series of portraits featuring the fifteen surviving rescue dogs that helped emergency crews search for survivors after the attacks of September 11. Covering over a dozen states, Dumas photographed the retired dogs in their familiar surroundings, to emphasize the similarity to their human veteran counterparts. The portrayed rescuers, who fearlessly joined their human companions into the aftermath of the terrorist attack, embody a decade coming to a close.
About The First Responder Alliance: We chose the First Responder Alliance as our beneficiary because thousands of 9/11 responders/workers, including firefighters/EMS workers, police officers and non-uniformed workers—construction workers, sanitation workers, volunteers and others— exhibit physical and mental health issues. As both mental and physical health issues force early retirement or interfere with employment, the need for career planning and job-search assistance rises. The First Responder Alliance offers programs for this population, free of charge, including health and wellness, stress management, nutrition, career planning workshops, life management and family relationship building and communication. www.tuesdayschildren.org/programs/responders About Charlotte Dumas: Charlotte Dumas (The Netherlands, 1977) attended the Rietveld Academie of Amsterdam and subsequently studied as a resident at the prestigious Rijks Academy for visual Arts in Amsterdam. Dumas is an animal photographer, using a standard 80 mm lens on medium format to reveal an up-close view of the intricacies of the human/animal relationship. In each of her projects Dumas inspires her viewers to sympathize with the animal, which, caged or not, somehow always seems entrapped in a world dominated by the supreme mammal-human. The artist is represented by Julie Saul Gallery, New York. www.saulgallery.com/dumas/statement.html Julie Saul Gallery will be showing a selection from Retrieved, from 9/8 through 10/15. 535 West 22nd Street. www.saulgallery.com 212 627 2410
